Dosages
Treatment of Influenza and other Diseases

After testing over 500 patients, I found that 94.7%
of my patients are deficient in inorganic iodine.
Dr. David Brownstein
There are several reference points we can use to plot out iodine dosages for a variety of disorders that beg for the use of iodine for successful treatment. In this chapter I will present different views and practices from present as well as from the long past when iodine was vastly more popular as a medicine than it is today. For whatever irrational reason, doctors and patients fear iodine thus en mass do not use to its fullest potential.
Humans tolerate large doses of iodine but the ultra high doses that were used many decades ago are not required to get the most out of iodine therapy. Just a little goes a long way, as the governmental iodized salt programs showed but this dosage level was only affective for Goiter and its avoidance. It actually takes very little iodine to prevent this disease but no one ever said that was the only purpose and need for iodine in the body. Today people are more deficient then ever before because our need for iodine has increased in direct proportion to our toxic burdens especially of other competing halogens.
So effective is iodine that aerosols can be effective in sterilizing a room at levels not even detectable by humans. But Dr. David Derry of Canada says that, “Dietary iodine found in iodized salt is below the amounts needed to fill mucus defense roles. To protect themselves, people wishing to boost their defense against infections should supplement their diets with iodine.”
“Extremely high doses of iodine can have serious side effects, but only a small fraction of such extreme doses are necessary to kill influenza viruses,” continues Derry who tells us, “In 1945, a breakthrough occurred when J.D. Stone and Sir McFarland Burnet (who later went on to win a Nobel Prize for his Clonal Selection Theory) exposed mice to lethal effects of influenza viral mists. The lethal disease was prevented by putting iodine solution on mice snouts just prior to placing them in chambers containing influenza viruses.”
Dr. Derry is one of several MDs that I refer to as the Iodine Doctors.
Dr. David Brownstein said, “After testing individuals and finding low iodine levels, I began to use smaller milligram amounts of iodine/iodide (6.25mg/day). Upon retesting these individuals 1-2 months later, little progress was made. I therefore began using higher milligram doses (6.25-50mg) to increase the serum levels of iodine. It was only with these higher doses that I began to see clinical improvement as well as positive changes in the laboratory tests. Why would people need the larger doses of iodine? Why have iodine levels fallen 50% in the last 30 years? As I pondered these questions, I came to the conclusion that the toxicity of modern life must be impacting iodine levels. It is well known that the toxic halides, fluoride and bromide, having a similar structure as iodine, can competitively inhibit iodine absorption and binding in the body. Because of the elevated levels of toxic halides in the environment and in the food supply, iodine levels have not only fallen but larger amounts of iodine are necessary to correct iodine deficiency as well as to promote a detoxifying effect of heavy metals.”
I have suggested that people put iodine into a nebulizer for aerosol treatment for transdermal effect into the lung tissues in the case of lung cancer, emphysema, asthma and tuberculosis. I make the recommendation to do the same with magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and glutathione. It seems obvious that iodine would make the ideal first line of defense in influenza prevention and without doubt in the treatment of both swine flu and regular influenza. Iodine, teamed up with these other primary and very necessary substances, offers an exceptionally strong defense and treatment against viral infection. It certainly is better than the antiviral Tamiflu, which only reduces symptoms by only one day. It is really not hard to beat that.
Some physicians I know are also using chlorine dioxide as an agent for treatment either transdermally or intravenously applied but I would never use it for the prevention of anything. Though I have heard some success stories about chlorine dioxide I do not use it myself nor for my children. I always will reach for the iodine first for all the things that chlorine dioxide proponents advocate, for the iodine is much safer for oral usage, especially when used in the right form. The body needs iodine anyway as a fundamental nutritional item but when even heavier guns are needed instead of reaching for a pharmaceutical one can think of chlorine dioxide.
A function of iodine in the human body relates to clear thinking.
The mind simply works better when the body is supplied the iodine it
needs and studies do show that iodine deficiency leads to decline in IQ.
Despite its being critical to normal neurocognitive development, a new study finds that only 51% of US prenatal multivitamin brands contain any iodine, and in a number of randomly selected brands, the actual dose of iodine contained in the supplements did not match values on the labeling.[1] It is easy to understand a synthetic pharmaceutical being phased out but to have iodine, an essential nutritional element that doubles as a super effective full spectrum anti-pathogen, ignored for what it can do is not reasonable.
Dr. Michael B. Schachter says, “The treatment dose when a person is iodine insufficient is generally between 12.5 mg and 50 mg daily. Preliminary research indicates that if a person is iodine insufficient, it takes about 3 months to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 50 mg of iodine and a year to become iodine sufficient while ingesting a dosage of 12.5 mg of iodine daily. However, the patient needs to be monitored closely with awareness of possible side effects and detoxification reactions.” This is quite a bit of iodine and if his statements can be substantiated then most people are using dosages which are much too low.
In fact if we put our attention on the full iodine story, which collides with the fluoride, mercury and bromide story we conclude that we can only err on the side of too low of a dose. Patients should push their dosages higher and higher until they get the desired result but I recommend doing this slowly unless there is little time as is the case in emergency situations or very late stage cancer. When using the Nascent Iodine one can dose pulse every two hours orally taking each individual dose up to as many as 20 drops and even at this level we are no where near points of iodine toxicity and tolerance. I have given my own three year old up to fifteen drops in a dose when she was confronted with fever and infection.
When treating life threatening diseases we do not have months to fool around with low dosages. We need to zoom up iodine levels quickly. And we need to get it concentrated to certain tissues or organs. Just to give you an idea of how high iodine dosages have been taken to we have to revisit the 1930s when iodine was still a universal medicine, present in the US Pharmacopeia and was used at much higher dosages than anyone even dreams of using today.
The usual dose for treatment was 300 mgs (46 drops of full strength Lugol’s) to 1 gm (1000 mg, 154 drops). It is very important to realize that today’s Lugol’s is not universally the same as it was because of new federal legal requirements about concentration levels. The best company offers Lugol’s at varying concentration levels. (2.2, 3 and 7 percent) Nascent is a 2 percent solution.
Preoperative before thyroidectomy: Lugol solution 5-10 gtt
three times daily, or 2-6 gtt twice or three times daily
given 10-21 days prior to surgery has been used.

Dr. Schachter wrote,” Dr. Abraham started this Iodine Project around 1998 when he became aware of the many benefits of treating patients with iodine using doses far beyond the 2 mg a day, which most physicians consider to be potentially toxic. He noted that starting in the 1820s, the French physician Jean Lugol used these higher doses to treat a wide variety of conditions. Dr. Lugol combined elemental iodine (5 %) and potassium iodide (10%) with 85 % water. Since iodine kills infectious agents, Dr. Lugol successfully treated many infectious conditions with this solution, which became known as Lugol’s solution, and which is still available today. Prior to World War II, many American and European physicians used Lugol’s solution to treat thyroid conditions, using doses higher than 2 mg daily without apparent significant adverse effects.”
When you look at mainstream recommendations all the above information seems strange but this is because dosage and RDA are set obscenely low. Note instead of talking in milligrams (mg) the RDA is in micrograms (mcg) which is a scale exactly 1000 times less. Meaning it takes 1000 mcg to equal 1 mg and it takes 1000 mg to equal a gram.
Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA):50mcg daily for infants 0-12 months; 90mcg daily for 1-8 years; 120mcg daily for 9-13 years; 150mcg daily for 14-18 years.
Adequate Intake (AI) for infants:110mcg daily for ages 0-6 months; 130mcg daily for 7-12 months.
Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL): 200mcg/day for ages 1-3 years; 300mcg/day for 4-8 years; 600mcg/day for 9-13 years; 900mcg/day for 14-18 years (including pregnancy and lactation).
Radiation emergencies: Potassium iodide (KI) should be taken just prior to, or as soon as possible after exposure. For infants, babies, and children, KI is administered for exposure of 5 centigrays (cGy) or more. For birth through 1 month, 16mg can be administered; for 1 month through 3 years, 32mg can be administered; for 3-12 years, 65mg can be administered; for adolescents ages 12-18 years, 65mg can be administered (or up to 120mg if the adolescent is approaching adult size).
The highest dosage I have heard any doctor using today is 100 mg and that is quite a bit when you take iodine in a form where you can taste and appreciate what you are taking into your body. My favorite iodine (Nascent) is ideal for oral and aerosol applications into both nebulizers and vaporizers though I believe Lugol’s, which is harsher on the stomach and has a very bitter taste, is better for transdermal application to the skin not only because it is less expensive but because you can get it at higher concentration.
Nascent Iodine, though more expensive actually tastes and feels good while going down and is gentle enough to give to children, who do not seem to complain about its taste. Having it on hand for ones children is important for when they need it you can get them to take it but that is not so certain with Lugol’s. Nascent iodine contains approximately 400 mcg per drop so 10 drops is 4 mg and 100 drops is only 40 so it’s safe to take much higher dosages than is suggested on the bottle. One hundred drops a day is a strong dose, but when treating life threatening diseases it would not be unheard of to use upward of 200 drops a day in divided doses. It is very important to remember though that one should not shoot straight up to these dosage levels. One should start at low dosages and monitor for detox reactions, which will be less if sodium bicarbonate and other substances are used in conjunction.
For alcohol-sensitive people there is Nanocollidal iodine:

Recovered alcoholics are extremely sensitive with
the tiniest amount of any alcohol a problem.
Dr. Abrahams recommends taking 50 mg of Iodine/Iodide as Lugol’s solution (8 drops) daily for 3 months as a loading dose. Lugol’s solution is available online at varying concentrations. Then his recommendation is that dose should be gradually reduced to the 12.5 mg (2 drops) maintenance dosage under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care professional. Dr Abrahams feels that 14 to 15 mg. of iodine/iodide daily is the upper maximum of safety for long term use. This is close to Dr. James Howenstine’s (another prominent iodine advocate) recommended dose of 12.5 mg daily.
In 1953 Dr. Orian Truss discovered the devastating effects of antibiotics in an Alabama (USA) hospital. During a hospital round Truss was intrigued by a gaunt, apparently elderly man who was obviously dying. However, he was only in his forties and in hospital for four months. No specialist had been able to make a diagnosis. Out of curiosity Truss asked the patient when be was last completely well. The man answered that he was well until six months before when he had cut his finger He had received antibiotics for this. Shortly afterwards he developed diarrhea and his health deteriorated. Truss had seen before how antibiotics cause diarrhea. It was known that Candida was opportunistic and thrived in debilitated patients, but now Truss wondered if it might not be the other way round, that Candida actually caused the debilitated condition.
Truss had read that potassium iodide solution could be used to treat Candida infestation of the blood. So he put the patient on six to eight drops of Lugol’s solution four times a day and soon the patient was again completely well. Soon afterwards he had a female patient with a stuffy nose, a throbbing headache, vaginitis and severe depression. To his amazement all her problems immediately cleared with Candida treatment.
When I was coming to closure on this chapter I happened to talk to Dr. Brownstein. We were in total agreement about dosages. Our consensus extended to the proposition that the sicker the patient the more iodine they would need with most average patients needing 25 to 50 mgs with 12 mg being a good maintenance dose though of course this varies with the quality of ones diet and with ones location. Living near the beach has its health advantages but in no case should one depend on iodized salt for their needs.
Dr. Brownstein said he was using 200 to 300 mg with his prostate and breast cancer patients with those who have metastases needing the highest dosages. He also uses both Lugol’s and Nascent reserving the Nascent for his more sensitive patients. The there are the tablet form of varying dosage, which are used by more than several of the iodine doctors I know.
Iodine is needed in microgram amounts for the thyroid,
mg amounts for breast and other tissues, and can
be used therapeutically in gram amounts.[2]
Dr. David Miller

just a shoty note to express my appreciation for your sharing of knowledge …it is slowly sinking in …I mean I’m only 68 :O) …
blood pressure was high and iodine may be an issue …long term hypo thyroid ..I been reading and saving your issues since January 13th 09 …lost some weight and altered my food to raw or home cooked …drinking nettle and dandylion teas only
thank you so much
Norm
Very informative and well written. I strongly believe iodine is a requirement for good health.
I believe it should be stressed that taking large doses requires the addition of selenium to prevent damage to the thyroid. (200-400mcg max).
Also, if iodine treats candida, would it not be required to replace the good bacteria as it would also kill those off?
Anyone able to help on reasonable dosage of iodine in this patient with no thyroid due to extraction in 1994, plus other cancer, immunity and also tiredness issues due to taking only half (150mcg per day)of the originally-prescribed doseage of Synthroid ™ thyroxine over three years so as to discourage recurrence of a sarcoma from 2005? Thanks.
Dear Mark Sircus: What a wonderful review on iodine, thank you! I am making my list of measurements in case of H1N1 swuie flu or H1N1 swine flu mandatory vaccination and indeed for the first situation is absolutely needed and also for the 2nd right?
I have 3 questions, how is thyroid metabolism altered with some of these dosages of iodine?
Do we need a thyroid profile be taken first to take iodine?
How is iodine deficiency determined?
I send you a big hug. Dr. Elena Manrique.
Great article and badly needed, especially in these perilous times.
I have periodontal disease and have been using Iosol’s iodine but too conservatively. I will try doubling the dosage to 23mg a day and I feel optimistic that my gum problems will greatly diminish if not disappear altogether. Thank you!
hello. my comment is – thank you for this information. i had just sat down at the computer to determine iodine dosage once and for all. this has been a very unclear issue for me. before i started i checked my email and there was your newsletter re iodine. perfect timing! i also have a quick question. i am treating three dogs for cancer: 7 lbs with melanoma of the jaw and chin; 20 lbs with malignant tumor at top of right front leg; 7 lb female with rectal, vaginal and now mammary tumors. my vet doesn’t know the first thing about iodine. could you possibly just give me your best guess as to dosage for these little guys? i just started a few days ago with consistent doses. i use magnescent and give each dog 5 drops twice daily. i do not think this is enough. if these were your own dogs…
also – can you put magnescent or lugols right on the tumors?
thank you and very kind regards,
peggy
I have purchased the books about magnesium and Iodine and I think your information is really helpful. I have been taking 3 drops of Nascent iodine 3 time a day since I read your book.
I had some standard blood test done a few weeks ago. My TSH was 5.3 and normal 0.3 to 4.8. My doctor said I was ruining my thyroid and to stop taking the Iodine. Can this be possible? He is not an alternative practitioner and we argue allot. I have not taken any for a month now and think I am doing wrong, Can you enlighten me?
I’ve been an avid reader of your letters for a long time now. As it happens I also belong to the Weston A. Price Foundation, in fact I’m a local chapter leader in Germany. The last two issues of their journal Wise Traditions dealt with iodine.
Having put the fear of thyroid trouble into me by my pharmacist who refused to sell me Lugol’s when he heard I wanted to use it internally, I had been reticent and only used it externally after purchasing it from another pharmacy.
Once I started using iodine in a homeopathic form my stubborn sinus issues finally started resolving. Then I read that topical treatment of moles with iodine would make them fall off or disappear within three to four weeks.
This experiment is still in progress, but I can feel the iodine working on my moles, they first turn darker and itch and then they crust over and flake off. The results so far have been encouraging, both with the moles and sinus troubles at the same time.
With my experience, this treatment could put dermatologists out of business.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge,
Anita
Hi doc Mark,
I finally managed to find 10% iodine in Australia, and have removed a cancer?wart? that had been burnt 4 times,( never went away and had grown,) from the back of my hand. I wish I had taken pictures to share! I now cannot find a trace of distorted pores at all, and have perfect skin once again:-) I admit it did itch a bit at the 2 week stage, so I backed off till it stopped, used fresh aloe leaves to soothe it, and then continued, all I can say is Brilliant!!!! and thank you so much for very good advice:-)
This article and information is very interesting to me, and a you do not mention ‘mood’ changes, I thought I would send this message.
Earlier this year, I became aware that I was lacking in motivation to do anything at all. Normally I am a very active eighty year old. I complained about may state to a friend on the phone, and she suggested maybe Iodine would/could help. When i looked it up on product information on the GLN website, that source said that iodine deficiency is related to lack of WILL, just what I was feeling. Once I started to take the recommended five drops a day, within a few days things were back to normal for me. Hooray!.
Since then I have maintained the 5 drops a day, and all is well.
I gather from your article that probably more than 5 drops, maybe up to 12 drops daily would be of benefit, so I will try increasing gradually and see how that goes. I normally have very good health, tho I have had each hip replaced, and have been warned that my bone density needs to be strengthened, tho’ it is only slightly low.
Thank you for this information in your article.
Took two years to convince my brother, an M.D., that he could quit his Synthroid (25 years) if he supplemented iodine. Took 6.5 mg Iodural, twice a week and then switched to eating seaweed (4.5-5.5 mg per serving) as kombu or some other. Interestingly, his hemoglobin jumped 2 points to 12.5 after being somewhat anemic for years.
Currently trying to cure my sister with Hashimoto’s disease (15 years). With 2.5 mg of Lugol’s 2%, daily, and 88 mcg of Synthroid her TSH has dropped to 0.19. So it obviously is working. I wish she would reduce her Synthroid more. After four years of telling her to use iodine on her psoriasis, she relented and the large spot on her ankle cleared. She is now trying it on her scalp.
My wife’s borderline glaucoma (iop 19) dropped to 15 after daily 225 mcg for one year. No other changes in her diet or supplementation so it must have been the iodine.
Daughters and other women ceased having menstrual problems with as little as 225 mcg but I recommend a minimum of 675 mcg.
Women with lifelong cold hands and feet have had vast improvement with 1 mg and would probably do better with more.
Am about to leave to work with a woman who doesn’t want to go on Synthroid for hypothyroidism.
I am not a doctor. I am a retired utility worker but I do what I can. I am so tired of patents being abused and killed by their well intentioned doctors. Most have been brainwashed by the pharmaceuticals and our corrupt government. I have another brother who is a doctor but he is slowly learning and now uses transdermal magnesium. It’s a start. You know that most doctors take at least one course of “god schooling”.
Sorry, forgot. Do take selenium, as Bruce said. Also, selenium without iodine can damage the thyroid so start it after beginning the iodine. Four Brazil nuts will do. Need it to convert the T4 to T3.
As Laurel said, it works on skin cancer. Had a long time spot on my forearm that continually itched. Iodine cleared it up. Pealed a couple times but then fine.
Would Iodine help with a bacteria problem in one’s vagina? I have dealt with this for almost 3 years taking antibiotics. It clears up but comes back. I have douced with soda, vinegar and boric acid the last time. I am at a loss as to what to do. I also had a pap smear which did not turn up anything wrong.
thanks,
Leslie
I have worried with an odor problem in my female area, taking antibiotics on and off for 2-1/2 years. It clears up and then comes back. would taking Iodine orally help? Would doucing with iodine take care of it? I also have taken acidolphis but have heard that there are two things doctors have discovered that are needed which is not in the acidolphis??
I am very clean and have not had sex since married about 3 years ago. I also had a pap smear which turned out ok. I was poisoned with supposedly mercury. Do you think that could have caused the problem?
I was able to get the old Lugol’s before they reduced the percentage.
thanks,
Leslie
P.S. I wasn’t sure my post here got through, so apologize if two posts.
Leslie
This is for Deenie with the peridontal disease.
Chris Astill-Smith D.O etc. at http://www.metabolics.co.uk has told his classes that liquid folic acid, taken between 11 PM and 1 AM (Standard time) will significantly reduce peridontal disease.
Directions are to brush and floss normally, then put 2-3 squirts of the liquid folic acid in your mouth. Swish it around and massage it into your gums with your tongue for 5-10 minutes. Then swallow it. He tells us that the folic acid is needed to facilitate tissue repair. It works best doing it between 11 PM and 1 AM because this is “gallbladder time” in Chinese medicine. I do not know how/why “gallbladder time” and the liquid folic acid use correlates like this, but his experience indicates it does. There is some Wedtern medicine research that indicates certain drugs work better when taken at certain times, so there is some general confirmation that the concept of dosing vs. timing has some documented validity.
His website contains video courses of major value for those interested in the clinical application of biochemistry.
Dear Leslie,
Yes taking iodine orally and douching with it would be part of a good treatment. So would doing the same with sodium bicarbonate and even with magnesium chloride or what is known as magnesium oil. For the mercury part, which is a big part of most peoples presenting picture of disharmony (disorder) first step would be taking selenium and Alpha Lipoic Acid (rALA) and then a good natural chelation product. Also this brings up the use of clay, both a good eating clay and topical clay. I deal with LL Magnetic Clay Company for the magnesium, iodine and clay aspects of my protocol as well as for a probiotic you should take. I also like Living Stream Probiotic for transdermal use but probiotic has to be in your treatment story. You can see on my Online Clinic site my product endorsements and the contact information.
This statement about not having sex for three years since being married, if true or accurately communicated, could also be part of the problem though the antibiotics and mercury pathology picture would still be a factor no matter what. But if there is a sexual block and a shutting down of areas and organs of the body to pleasure and love well this you would benefit from looking into.

Doctor, I thankfully ask this: Is there a liquid measure that can be used for the %5 Lugols doseage such as 1/2 teaspoon, etc.? How much do I need measured in a teaspoon? or a tablespoon? God bless you ! And what else do we need to take with Lugols’ ? F,64,Hashimotos,etc. Taking 4-5 Armour daily as available. p.s. Under a good dr.s orders I once took 35 grains daily of Cytomel and did very well. I can no longer afford it.
Dr. Sircus deserves alot of credit for telling the truth about alternative treatments of cancers, infections, etc. I would like to add a bit of info regarding cancer. In 1948, my grandmother who was 50 then, was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. So she decide to switch to an ND (naturapatic doctor) He treated her with IV injections of medical grade hydrogen peroxide over a period of 8 weeks. She lived for another 30 years. There are under ground clinics who do this.
Thank you Dr. Sircus
Thank you for this information. It is so hard to get accurate information on dosages. When taking iodine and also using sodium bicarbonate orally can they be taken close together or should they be taken at different times. I understand iodine can reduce the effectiveness of antioxidants, and should not be taken together. does the same apply with sodium bicarb and other nutients?
Where would we be without Dr. Sircus as a champion for natural therapies. Thank you!
Lugol’s being a much higher concentration, is commonly measured in drops, not teaspoonfuls or fractions of. The amount you use is dependent on what you are treating. Maintenence doses are different from treatment doses. You should work with a qualified health care practitioner to ensure the best plan for you.
[...] C, magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, zinc and iodine as well as the sun, plenty of good water, exercise and sufficient sleep will do more to protect you [...]
LESLIE, Go to Earth Clinic for your issue and read. I am sick of the subject when it is a no-brainer.
Women from all over the world write in about the same subject and want an instant cure. They just
don’t want to read. Again………. read. It is a pH , probotic, yeast, folic acid , and enzyme thing. Read.
Your idiot doctor has no clue except for anti-biotics , which will last a few weeks.
still learning to understand Lugol usage
I too am still confused about Lugol’s maintenance dosage. I read everything I can find on the subject and cannot afford the book at this time. I am in my 50′s and I weigh 114lbs. I have no medical/health issues that I am aware. Can anyone tell me what a good daily dosage would be? HELP
I already have the 2% and the 5% Lugol’s but have no clue how much to take.
Excerpt from the site of J. Crow a retailer of Lugol’s iodine:
When used to maintain the iodine content of the body the dose is small and is taken only on certain days of the week. When the mineral content of the body is analyzed, only a trace of iodine is found. Ten drops of iodine represent more iodine than is found in the entire body. For this reason, the dose of Lugol’s solution of iodine is one or two drops, depending on your body weight. If you weigh 150 pounds or less, for example, your dose to maintain the normal iodine content of the body is one drop, taken at one meal on Tuesday and Friday of each week. If you weigh more than 150 pounds, the dose should be two drops instead of one. It is useful to remember that the human body works on the minimum of anything it needs. If there should be a rise in sickness in the area where you live, it would be well to take the Lugol’s solution three times a week instead of two, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for the purpose of storing up reserve.
How is the drop of the solution to be taken, on the directed days? In general, medical men prescribe iodine to be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 20 minutes before food is taken. During the passing years Vermont folk medicine has worked out a different plan and it is one I like to follow. It has been referred to in another connection elsewhere in this book. To repeat, adding one teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water to make the water acid in reaction, holding the medicine dropper horizontal in order to get a maximum drop, one drop of the Lugol’s solution is added to the mixture. The contents are stirred with a spoon and sipped through the course of the meal, as one would drink a cup of coffee or tea.

However please be aware that IMVA recommends the use of Nascent Iodine which is a detoxified form and can be taken in higher amounts. Nascent Iodine is available from LL’s Magnetic Clay Co.
Sincerely,
Claudia French RN, LPHA
I appreciate the info. I will have to stay with Lugol’s as I can’t afford $36 for one ounce of the Nascent iodine. Lugol’s is high enough for the 5% but the 2% is more affordable.
Funny how these simple old-fashioned meds seemed to drastically elevate in price when they once again became desirable and needed. Natural medicine seems to be following in the steps of big pharma and we simple folks are the ones being fleeced no matter what we choose.
Becky, I must agree, the natural health root seems to be getting more expensive as more people find the true solution in nutrition and not pharmecudicals. I find that getting back to the Bible is the sane way to go. God gives us wisdom if we will take the time to read His word and much of that wisdom leads to excellent health. In fact the Bible tells us that the Word of God is health to our flesh and strength to our bones, that life is in the blood. God also tells us that the Love of money (not money itself) is the root of All evil….so there will be those who get greedy in the Natural health industry just like the Pharmecudical industry. We all need to get back to basics. Americans have gotten so far from the land, soil and let chemical companies tempt farmers into more crops rather than healthy crops….God tells us that men follow a way that seems right but leads to death….I am sure that this statement could be used in many avenues of life but for our health many Americans run to doctors instead of Gods way…..He tells us that men will reap what they sow, for good or bad…the seed we plant today is the harvest tomarrow….we must realize everything we think and do is a seed of some sort,….God is amazingly wise, more than we for sure. Doing word studies in the Bible is very enlightening, even the words of our mouth produce life and death, blessing and cursing…..I find a great amount of peace and hope in following God’s ways, even though I have not attained perfection, it is an encouragement to me to keep on the narrow path as I do see now it leads to life and life more abundant. Just my 2 cents worth for today…God bless you all in your endeavors to be healthy.
Kind Regards !
Thank you for this information. I am new to the concept of treating infections with iodine. Would this be recommended to treat strep throat infection in a 10yr.old/117lb. boy and at what dosage? Can the Nascent Iodine be purchased in any local stores or only online?
Thank you!
Hi there.
I am a 51 year old female living in India. I have hypothyroid with typical symptoms. It is just recently that I came across the concept of iodine supplementation. We do not have such a concept here in India.
I bought a bottle today and it says “Aqueous Iodine Solution I.P. ’66′. I really do not understand what it means.
I would just like to start using iodine orally in really small quantity. I have no clue whether or not I am iodine deficient. I am just guessing small amounts would not harm me.
Can anyone suggest what is the strength of my solution and how much should I take at what time intervals? Please reply to me.
My daughter has a boil due to a staph infection. She is 21 months old. Would I be able to treat her with iodone, if so what dosage?
Dear Yelena,
You can try dabbing iodine directly on the boil three times/day.
You can also try making a paste of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and placing this on top of the boil three times/day. This has also helped many people with boils.
Best of luck,

Hello. How would you use iodine for cold sore (herpes) mouth to either reduce the healing time or prevent future outbreaks? Thank you Jeany
Hello again,
I purchased Lugoli*s iodine 5% so please tell me what is the best way to use. I mention it*s the treatment of ovarian cancer. Thank you!
Dear Mina,
Dr. Sircus only recommends Lugol’s iodine in specific instances of cancer treatment. Please see his book on Iodine.
He instead attempts to battle cancers with the full force of his protocol which would include sodium bicarbonate use and magnesium and other substances. Please see his cancer books for a greater understanding of this. http://winningcancer.com/
Other ebooks are available at: http://publications.imva.info/index.php/e-books.html If you want specific instructions, you can request a private consultation with him. He will not make specific recommendations without much more information from you. Please see: http://naturalallopathicclinic.com/

Iodine is effective against herpes. You can use nascent iodine and paint it on the cold sore, or you can use one of the povidone iodine ointments. But there are many things that will help to heal cold sores, Zinc is another, see George Eby’s site on this at: http://george-eby-research.com/html/herpes.html
You can also make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the cold sore. It will help to drain and dry it within a short time.
Apply iodine or sodium bicarbonate past 2-3 times/day depending on your tolerance.

Claudia French

I found Iodine accidentally! Could never grow my hair long..but guess what..its down my back now, and thicker and shinier! Amazing. And I’m 81 and for the first time can wear my hair up!! Was hypothyroid, have had the heart attack etc etc. Now I’m told from an ultrasound that I’ve actually grown some new bloodvessels in my heart. Lve my Iodine, and love the Magnesium spray, and take Bi carb twice a day,( and lost 17 kg!!)
Thank you Dr Sircus for all this wonderful info. Margaret
I am new here, but very interested in iodine and want to follow all the comments. How much for weightloss?
Wow, it’s great to seen so many people finding Dr. Sircus’ info on iodine, sodium bicarbonate and magnesium chloride! I just found out from this comment area that I have been taking quite a low dose of nascent iodine and I am surprised as I, even at a low dose, have been so energetic and so emotionally stable ( I used to get depressed alot) I can’t wait to start using magnesium chloride when I can afford it! Thank goodness sodium bicarbonate is still pretty cheap!
To our good health, physically and emotionally! April
What is the difference between iosol iodine and nascent iodine
Thank you. Geineker@optonline
I have Epstein barr virus would the iodine help
Hi Gail,
IOSOL IODINE: One drop contains 1.83 mg of iodine/iodide
NASCENT IODINE: One drop contains 200 mcg or .2 mg of iodine
Nascent iodine is gentler and less irritating than iodide can be, but because of the way it is formulated, is more active in the body.
Sincerely,
Claudia French

walter last has protocol for using iodine as a microbial in conjunction with pro biotics.
Hello.
I am double posting because I think I typed in the wrong cat,
I have required some nascent iodine 2%, my daughter would like to use it on her face because she has trouble with boils, but do you use it neat or with water, and do you use a light brush to put in on the face, or just dab it on, she also has magnesium gel, how is the best way to combine the two.
kindest regards, terry.
If you have Hashimoto’s, I have read that it is dangerous to supplement with iodine. What is your opinion and what amount of Nascent Iodine should one use then?
Carol,
You can find Dr. Sircus’ complete answer to your question by reading his recent essay posted on his blog site : Iodine Phobia and Salt Truth
Medical supervision in recommended if you have Hashimoto’s and dosage may vary according to individual circumstance.

Terry,
Its important to find out the cause of recurrent boils ..they are usually caused by staph bacteria, but more commonly are being caused by a very resistant form of staph bacteria. Dietary and lifestyle changes may be needed to prevent re-occurrances. You might want to consult a naturopathic MD to make sure the an underlying condition such as diabetes is not at play here.
You can apply iodine directly to the skin though nascent iodine will stain skin on the face. You can purchase povidone iodine gel instead if you wish, and take the nascent iodine orally instead. Magnesium gel can be applied alternating with iodine, directly to the skin….both at 3x day… but apart from each other.
Sincerely,
Claudia French

I am currently using the Iodine topically on my 10 year old son who has Mulluscum. We have been putting it on almost every day and they are getting smaller and some have disappeared all together in as little as 3 days. We originally went to the dermatologist and had them painfully burned off and it didn’t work..they only multiplied!!
I have seen first hand Iodine curing goiter, gout and Hoshimoto’s as well as weight loss.
I would LOVE some help in determining what doasge of Lugol’s 2.2% I ought to give to my baby, myself (pregnant) and my 6 year old. Thanks so much!
Alicia,
Dr. Sircus recommends using Nascent iodine for oral use and using Lugols only for topical use. You can read more about this on our Iodine site and in the Iodine book.

Several years ago whenever I got the flu, I would be extremely weak, be hot and cold for a while, and have a bad cough with gurgling in my lungs for at least one week.
Recently I got the flu. This time I was weak, but still able go get around, had a few hot/cold spells for about 8 hours. After one day, I felt much better. No cough and no gurgling in the lungs. After three day my temputure returned to normal. What is the difference?
Lugol’s solution for about one and half years. More recently I starting taking magnesium. As magnesium chloride in foot baths. I also took plenty of magnesium taurate and some iodized magnesium. I also take 9000 IU of vitamin D3. I also took Bicarbonate of Soda about one day after getting the flu. 1/2 teaspoon 6 times for the lst day, 3 dosages for the second day, and one dosage on the final day.
Just thought I would share this. God bless!
I just started using Nascent Iodine last week. I am noticing that I experience tennitus after taking even the smallest dose. I have a history of tennitus after taking certain medications, ie. Motrin, Cipro (took 3 pills and ears rang for 8 months). I did the iodine skin test and the stain stays on my skin for over 24 hours. I’ve read that tennitus can be associated with iodine deficiency BUT the symptoms of excess iodine can be the same as for deficiency. Could I have a iodine sensitivity?
Have you ever heard of this reaction?
Thank you!
Dear Dianne,
Research has shown that tinnitus from any cause (loud noises or medications) causes a reduced blood flow in the inner ear which is what causes tinnitus. Magnesium has been found to relax the blood vessels in the ear and increase circulation. The tinnitus then goes away. So try making some drops with the magnesium oil and distilled water and use that in the ear about an hour before you drink the nascent iodine. A bit of trial and error would be needed to determine the proper dilution. start with 50/50 water and mag oil.
You don’t say how much nascent iodine you are taking but it could be that you should cut back on that amount also. And with the stain lasting 24 hours, you may not need too much iodine supplementation.
Sincerely,
Claudia French

Salute to Iodine ~~~
My mother had to be in a nursing home for the last yr. of her life.
as the cartliage in her knee snapped and she needed more care.
Always, a lovely kind woman with a quick mind, she began to get angry and forget things. I could not administer any remedy to her, nor could I change the meds they were giving her.
I visited her daily. She was most disturbed that she was forgetting things and I was concerned about her anger.
One day she surprised me by a lovely attitude and her sharp mind back.
I realized that the last week or so she was moving back into her old self.
I asked the nurse practitioner if they were giving her anything different. He said yes. Iodine ~
Her mind remained alert until her physical self decided it was time to leave.94yrs.
Re: dosages, I take two to three drops of Nascent Iodine in 8 oz of water in am on empty stomach. How many mcg’s of selenium do you reccomend? Thanks,

I am concerned about preparing myself for radiation fallout. Since it takes several months to a year with iodine supplementation to protect the thyroid, are the potassium iodine tablets that are distributed during an emergency really of use? Also, can Lugol’s and Nascent be used in lieu of potassium iodine in case of a nuclear emergency? What are the recommended dosages?
A. Brinkley
Will the iodine help acne and what is the recommended dosage for this? Is this something that can be purchased at a pharmacy and used topically?
Dear Lets,
Iodine has been said to oftentimes be a cause of acne breakouts. Especially when used in high doses, or when first starting oral ingestion of it. Depending on the cause however, it can be helpful to treat topically with iodine. A paste of Sodium bicarbonate applied topically can also help .
Sincerely,
Claudia French
Dear Lets,
Iodine has been known to aggravate acne, especially if used orally in high doses. Most likely 5 drops of nascent in water won’t aggravate acen. Iodine can be used topically on acne but the solution will stain the skin, unless you can find colerless iodine, which is available but you will have to do a google search for it.
Anne,
Yes, Lugols and Nascent can be used in leiu of potassium iodine. Please see the various essays on Dr. Mark’s blog on radiation treatment for more information on radiation treatment. http://blog.imva.info/
I have the book: Iodine Return to the Universal Medicine and I have been taking Nascent Iodine. I don’t have time to go back and study the book right now but would like to continue taking the Iodine two to three drops a day in 8 oz. of water. Is it safe to say a supplement of 200 mcg’s will help the conversation of the T3 to T4 hormone or do I need to do more homework? Thanks for any insight.
I have a 9 yr old son with mild autism behaviors, doesn’t focus, is very bouncy, doesn’t have an indoor voice etc.
He is taking trienza an enzyme product, he has a mild milk allergy.
I would like to start giving him some Lugol’s 2% that I just purchased but I’m scared not knowing how much to give and how often?
Can Lugol’s be mixed with food, pudding, applesauce?
Trudi,
While we prefer using Nascent iodine, especially for children, I found this information on the site of JCrows, who retails LUGOL’S iodine. Its from Dr. Jarvis of Vermont Folk Medicine fame:
A second function of iodine is to calm the body and relieve nervous tension. When nervous tension runs high there is irritability and difficulty in sleeping well at night, and the body is continually on a combat basis, organized for fight and flight. All these points stress a body’s need for iodine to lessen nervous tension, relax the body and enable it to or-ganize for peace and quiet, by the building and storing of body reserves against time of need. I have learned through Vermont folk medicine that it is possible to repeatedly change an irritable, impatient, and restless child under ten years of age into a calm, patient individual within two hours’ time by giving one drop of Lugol’s solution of iodine by mouth in a vegetable or fruit juice or in a glass of water made acid in reaction by adding a teaspoonful of apple cider vinegar. I have repeatedly prescribed this in order to make it possible for a mother of a racehorse-type little boy or girl to be able to live comfortably with the child. I have never seen it fail to calm down a nervous child. http://www.jcrows.com/iodine.html
I have been using the Nascent Iodine for about a week, and I think that it’s giving me more energy and mental clarity. I have a testimonial from someone who visits my web site, and she told me that she was using topical iodine and taking it internally for cancer. She was doing well with it.
I keep reading about people taking Nascent Iodine but I’m not seeing any dosages mentioned recently – not even by the IMVA staff. There’s an issue with taking iodine with selenium but maybe that’s not Nascent Iodine? Does anyone know how much selenium to take with 3 drops of Nascent Iodine in 8 oz of water and does it matter if the water is alkaline?
Elizabeth,
Use a good pure water, like spring water. Specific questions about dosages cannot be answered here. A great deal of information has already been given in the essays and here on the comments, you may have to go back are read again. Dr. Sircus is publishing a new e-book which will address a lot of your questions, but specifics like your question on selenium should only be answered in consultation when the Doctor has full information on your situation and circumstances. A normal selenium dose should be fine to take with nascent iodine. Please read up on all of Dr. Sircus’ recent essays.
Hello
My 12 year old son has been dealing with Psoriasis now for 5 years. He has been on creams and Enbrel shots.
He also has Asperger Syndrome/ ADHD.
The shots did clear him up.
Last May we took him off the shots and prescriptions creams.
The Psoriasis has reappeared over the winter. I do not want him to go back on prescription meds.
I would like to try the iodine. What would be a proper dose.
Thank you
Susan H.
Dear Susan,
You would be better off following Dr. Sircus’ complete protocol of magnesium chloride , sodium bicarbonate and iodine for the problems you descrive, of Asperger/ADHD and psoriasis. Please read on all of our sites which can be found at the very top of each of our websites, and if you don’t find the information you need there, please obtain a consultation with Dr. Sircus.

A heart felt thank you for the information on this site.
The magnesium chloride products and the Nascent iodine discussed on this site are available in Australia for those
who wish to source it locally (my preference)) – http://www.rejuvehealth.com – in Queensland.
Hi, has anyone had experience with iodine dosage and bone infection. I have been getting odd bone chills in my forearms which comes and goes in severity. It is driving me crazy and worrying me. I can see from all these posts I wasn’t taking a high dosage for something this serious. So have increased to 20 drops of nascent iodine every 2 hours, even during the night. Now I am getting tingly arms and don’t know if this is a good thing, the chilled bone thing has diminished. My thumb which was bitten by a dog and broke the bone, seems to be improving after 1 day of the high dosage, but still stiff and sore to bend the knuckle.
Any advice would be very welcome. I don’t want to give in to more antibiotics, doctors or hospitals. I plan on beating this and having strong arms again. Thanks, all these posts are very illuminating. There is nothing so sweet as hearing people overcome their health problems.
Tanja,
Bone infections are difficult to treat. You need to get a direct consult with Dr. Sircus to determine the proper dosage of iodine needed and to decide what else would be helpful.
http://imva.info/index.php/about/consultation/
Where to start… I’ve had severe psoriasis for several years now, which came on extremely suddenly in my early 30s to the point where my body was almost covered, as well as my scalp with much hair falling out. I finally got on Enbrel and then Humira, which has controlled it somewhat, along with light treatments, but not totally. As a young child I had many ear infections and was given tons of antibiotics.
All my adult life I have also had bad PMS and fibrocystic breasts, depression and an overriding lack of energy that I could not attribute to any cause. Lately I have also been extremely irritable and exhausted for no reason, but completely unable to sleep through the night.
Now I am 37 and would give anything to feel better. I’ve heard there is a link with iodine, fibrocystic breasts, and psoriasis. I want to know how much iodine I should start to take to see if it will help my with these problems. I bought some kelp iodine supplements from Whole Foods and just took 550 mcg a little while ago. I thought I might start taking this dose twice a day to see if it might help; should I take more than this? Is the liquid kind more effective?
Any helpful advice is so much appreciated… I feeling like I’m feeling my way thru the dark on how to get started with this. Thank you.
Dear Erin,
Yes Iodine has proven beneficial in psoriasis and magnesium also is beneficial for fibrocystic breasts and PMS in addition to iodine. You should look into starting on a full protocol of Dr. Sircus’. Unfortunately we cannot advise specific dosages for you without more information on your condition and health. Please consider a consultation with Dr. Sircus for more specifics.
But you can start on a dose of nascent iodine working up to at least 10 drops/day divided doses in water and purchase some Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil from LL’s Magnetic Clay, and start using that transdermally. We are not currently recommending kelp due to the radiation problems in Japan, unless you are sure of the source and content of the kelp.
Hope this helps a little to get you started.
Hi there.
I’ve read about everything on this site, but nowhere I could find out about ADD. My son was diagnosed with it,he also have no concentration what so ever!! They want to put him on Ritalin(easy way out if you ask me!!!)
I started this morning to gave him 125ml sodium bicarbonate to start with. Is this amount correct? Must I continue with this?
PLEASE,IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I COULD DO TO SAVE MY CHILD???
PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanx!!!!
Dear Annemarie,
The amount of sodium bicarbonate necessary depends on what pH your son has. You need to be checking pH daily and let that be your guide. You also need to adjust his eating habits to a more alkaline diet so as not to be depenedent on the sodium bicarbonate alone.
One of the other VERY immportant supplements he should have is Magnesium. We have written a great deal on adhd and behavior problems and how this is often due to magnesium deficiency. Magnesium in combination with Vit B6 has been shown to totally reverse some cases. Magnesium given to prisoners and disturbed children has markedly cut down on behavior prolemns and violence. Please read on our magnesium site and in both the original Transdermal Magnesium Book and the new edition which should be out in about 2 weeks.. http://magnesiumforlife.com/
IMVA recommmends using Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil as it is the most pure form we have found and is perfectly safe to use in baths or as a body spray for children. Magnesium bath flakes from LL’s Magnetic Clay are also great for baths.

I would like some advice on potential iodine overdose.
I suggested to my mother to try and add iodine into her daily routine as she has bad arthritis, and as well as to protect herself from the upcominf radiation that will eventually sweep over northern europe, where we live.
She ordered some Lugols iodine but she ordered the 15% version, where one drop equates to 7.5mg. She started taking 6 drops a day and after about three weeks she developed swelling on her thyroid and started losing weight so she immediately stopped. The lump now refuses to go away, even after 3 months it is still there, but reducing slowly.
I just wondered could she have done some damage to her thyroid by suddenly injecting it with so much iodine, maybe affected it so it became underactive?? She’s really worried and has of course stopped taking it, and her doctor says it’s fine, but she’s beside herself with worry.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Dear Lee,
In certain circumstances consumption of excessive amounts of iodine can inhibit synthesis of the thyroid hormone, leading to thyroid enlargement, especially if you have or have had any type of autoimmune or thyroid disorder. Most ccases of hypoactive thyroid disorder resulting from iodine intake have been found to be transitory.
Iodine overdoses can cause the following symptoms:
Abdominal pain
Delirium
Coughing
Diarrhea
Metallic taste
Fever
Throat pain
Mouth pain
No urine output
Shock seizures
Stupor
Shortness of breath
Vomiting
Thirst
If your mother is taking a 15% Lugol’s iodine, which is much different than what we are familiar with here in the US, and manufacturers package differently and droppers all measure differently , it would be best if you contacted the retailer you obtained this from to ask about the symptoms of taking too much of their specific product.
Hello,
I have an 11 year old Grandchild diagnosed ADHD. We fought meds for 3 years and finally gave in to Focalin XR (10mg). I believe this child’s condition is due to toxicity stemming from the life style his parents lived. Drugs, alcohol, cigarette smoke (in very enclosed environments ie. car) and a very unhealthy diet and water supply. I have been searching for a natural Dr. in the Minneapolis MN area for him to work with in detoxifying and using iodine supplementation, but to no avail.
Does IMVA have any resource directory of physicians or Naturalpaths dedicated to these practices nation wide?
Thank you!
Dear Alite,
IMVA does not keep a list of doctors in the States that follow Dr. Sircus’ practice of allopathic medicine….sorry.
Dr. Sircus does have his online clinic however, which you can be a part of from a distance. Or you can arrange a consultation with him to get started on his treatment protocol. You can read about it here: http://naturalallopathicclinic.com/
Or perhaps some of the other readers of this site could give you a referral in your area.
Dear Claudia,
I like/ want ro use Iodine to clean my pineal gland from fluoride. Is Iodine helpful in this?
I bought Lugol 7% (with no other information on the bottle). How much mg of Iodine is in one drop?
I also have sleeping problems. Is iodine usage helpful for this?
Thank you, regards,
Marc
Dear Marc,
The amount per drop varies by the device used to measure. Please see the chart on this page to help you determine how much iodine is in a drop of the type ypu purchased. 7% iodine is much stronger than what is usually available.
http://www.altcancer.com/products/lugols-iodine
You might be better off contacting who you purchased this from to determine how much is in their drops. Yes adequate iodine will help displace fluoride in any part of the body.
Hello Dr Sircus and staff,
I’d like to know if I can give Nascent Iodine to an 18 month-old girl, she’s healthy. How many drops should I give? should it be mixed with water or just put in the mouth? She’s around 22 pounds, she’s always been skinny and a little picky. She doesn’t eat a bad diet though.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
To Van and Rosario,
Dr. David Brownstein, noted iodine doctor, recommends 0.08 mcg. per lb of body weight in children and to only do this under a doctor’s care and supervision.
You may have to dilute the iodine down in water and only give a portion of it or you could also give it only 2 or three times/week. It is best to consult with a qualified practitioner.
Dear Marc,
Please could you suggest a protocol for treating cervical dysplasia with nascent iodine?
Many thanks
Jill
Jill,
Nascent iodine can be used both orally and applied to the cervix via douche or other means when treating cervical dysplasia. You would need a consultation with Dr. Sircus to get specific dosages, instruction and recommendations for a specific protocol depending on the severity of your dysplasia. Other information would be needed from you before he could properly advise you.

hello,
i’m confused on what’s the best dosage to give my children because i do agree that most everyone is iodine deficient.
on naturalnews.com i could of sworn i’d read an article several months ago that said healthy children and adults should be taking 12.5mg a day. the article spoke of how many people in japan regularily consume around 13mg of iodine a day in their diets. now on here it seems to say otherwise- “900mcg/day for 14-18 years including pregnancy and lactation.”
my children (twins) are 14 years old. they’re both quite tall and healthy, but i would also say slightly overweight. my daughter weighs 140lbs. my son about 155lbs.
i purchased nascent iodine from naturalnews.com several months ago and at first i was giving my kids enough drops every day equivalent to 12.5 mgs each. as time went on i just sort of dropped the ball on that because of us always being busy/on the go. there are days i give them each 12.5mgs of nascent iodine still and days i only give them a couple drops a day (about 1mg). and there are days i don’t give them any iodine at all because i forget. i want to be consistent and know what is ideal for them, and for me too actually.
so is it recommended that i only give them 900mcg a day for proper iodine supplementation/health, or 12.5mgs a day? if you could please clarify this for me i would greatly appreciate it.
thanks so much!
lyn r.
Dear Lyn R,
Different people and doctors believe different dosages are needed, thus the confusion. To add to it further, it depends on where you are living and the levels of radiation your and your children are exposed to. The iodine doctors, Bernstein, Flechas, and others believe the high dose iodine treatments (min. of 12. 5 mg/day) is what is needed. NIH recommends 150 mcg/day.
In illness more iodine is needed. You need to decide whose philosophy to follow and go by their recommended doses…..or you can get a short consult with Dr. Sircus to get his specific recommendations for you and your children.
Hi,
I really appreciate it if you could answer my question:
I am having hypothyroid for few months, THS was 5.0, my doctor prescribed me levo 50 mg, I felt awful while taking it, I felt like out of the world, more tired, depreseed, sluggish than ever, gaining weight :( then after 3 months of taking it, after doing blood tests, my TSH was dropped to 0.2, my doctor told me to sstop the levo and check my blood after 1 month, i did the test, my TSH was back to 5.0. I decided to try any natural alternative, I live in Egypt, and they have only levo, no any other natural alternative. I ordered a “Desiccated Porcine Thyroid Tablets” through the internet and I got it shipped from USA. I’m taking it for a 3 months now, and no better changes in my blood tests :(
My questios is: do you recommend taking iodine and see wether it would help me or not? I bought kelp tablets that contain 225 mcg per tablet. This is the only choice I have here.
I really feel bad all the time.
Help me please.
Thank you so much.
Dear Dahlia,
Dr. Sircus feels that iodine can help even in hypoithyroid conditions. He generally recommends Nascent Iodine of Lugol’s which I believ can be3 shipped to you from the US. Kelp, depending on where it is sourced from may contain high amounts of radiation right now.
Yes you should try some iodine and see if this helps you.
Dear Dr. Sircus,
I recently bought your Nascent Iodine and Ancient Minerals. I have started the baths and supplementing with 6-8 drops of Iodine 3-4 times daily.
I have taken probably 15-20 doses of antibiotics over 20yrs and suffer from sinusitis, fatigue, muscle weakness, bloating and constipation.
My diet is excellent juicing and one meal a day vegetables and sardines….Warrior Diet Ori Hoffmeklar.
I have greatly improved but just can’t seem to quite shake this condition.
Can you help? I am willing to talk with you by phone for the 1hr consultation.
Please, advise.

Dear Jethro,
I have given your message to Dr. Sircus. I also suggest you contact Luciana directly to arrange an appointment.

Hi, my question is about an ear ach. Sounds practical to apply some iodine on a cotton ball and put into the ear to kill pathogens, can you or anyone comment on this idea. Thanks!
JaneRae,
Yes you can soak a cotton ball with Lugol’s or Nascent iodine….possibly others too, and put the cotton ball in your ear overnight. It might be uncomfortable at first but the stinging goes away quickly.
.1
Fantastic! I felt immediate relief after inserting the cotton ball and i appriciate your quick response, too. Part of my HMO’s protocol for ear infection is to flush the ear with a syringe using half vingear and warm water or a saline solution. I have white iodine 3.4 mg(as potassium iodide). Is there any reason why i can substitute this iodine solution for the above combos and rinse the ear with a syringe and iodine? You guys are wonderful! Thanks.
JaneRae,
Yes you can use potassium iodide but watch for excessive irritation to your ear canal….some products can be corrosive.to the skin. We prefer using nascent iodine as it is a gentler formula, but people have been using Lugol’s , potassium iodide, and even povidone iodine for ages to help cure these ear infections.
Thanks you so much. I do have nascent iodine on hand. Evidentally iodine does disolve ear wax. I applied a warm wash cloth also. After inserting a cotton ball all night, wax drained to the opening of my ear and I was able to clear a lot out and no more pain, no more suffering! The only thing i did wrong was misdiagnosis myself – it was not an infection – just a plugged ear. Thanks again for your valuable time, what you are doing is much good karma for you!
Hi,
I purchased aqueous iodine APS 10ml from my chemist, but am confused as to what dosage to take, as 2-8 drops have been mentioned:
‘Dr. James Howenstine’s (another prominent iodine advocate) recommended dose of 12.5 mg daily.’
But if I only have 10ml, how do I get to take 8 drops (50mg). The bottle is 3/4 full. Your advice is appreciated. Also, I am on bp meds, will this have a detrimental affect on me?
Thanks
Amanda
Amanda,
You will need to go back to your chemist for more information. 10 ml is not going to last you very long… Check with the chemist on how many drops will equal the dosage you desire and see about getting some nascent iodine instead, or even the Lugols. Dr. Sircus is not familiar with what you now have so its difficult to advise you on it.
Ok, I will do.. If i ordered nascent iodine, would that affect my high blood pressure/taking my bp meds? Thanks
Amanda,
Iodine should not adversely affect your blood pressure or interfere with the medicines you take for it. It may interfere with thyroid medicines.
I have a question about a wart on the skin of a friend. It’s loosening up and almost ready to come off. He is testing the skin now for skin sensitivity since the wart is on his face with clear iodine. To hasten the process wouldn’t it be benificial to make a paste of sodium bicarbonate and apply it? Maybe both applications would work, iodine and sodium bicarabonate? Thank you for your valuable time and opinion.
JaneRae,
Yes he can alternate applications of sodium bicarbonate paste and iodine throughout the day.( 2-3xeach)
Can someone clear something up for me? Dr. Brownstein’s iodine book says that the thyroid primarily uses iodide, while the breasts and other parts of the body primarily use iodine. How does this difference factor in when using Nascent iodine, which I understand is not the molecular form, but the atomic form? Can one simply use nascent iodine and be assured, as LL’s Magnetic Clay states, that this type of iodine is easily used and absorbed by the ENTIRE body, not differentiating between certain organs???? Thanks, and God Bless…!
Rebecca,
The answer to your question is “yes”, nascent iodine can be utilized by all areas of the body.
In the book Bringing Back the Universal Medicine Dr. Sircus explains the differences in opinions on iodine and iodide and how iodine in the nascent form can convert in the body to whichever form is needed by a specific organ .
This essay used to be on our Iodine site, but is no longer. However it is still available on some other sites with different titles, but written by Dr. Sircus. Here is one place you can read it: http://www.scribd.com/doc/6989376/Nascent-Iodine-Mark-Sircus
I certainly hope someone can help me with what I’m about to write. I’m 47 yoa and have controlled a moderate blood pressure issue with medication for about the last 7 years. However, I had been chronically worried about vascular disease, particularly atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis. I finally tried a protocol for arterial scouring that was suggested by Dr. Jonathan Wright in Washington State. This involved iodine supplementation with niacin. According to Dr. Wright, a couple of opthamologists observed an 80% widening of narrowed arteries (that were observable in the back of eye) after being on the referenced regimen. I was sold, and wanted to try it.
Dr. Wright’s dispensary sold an iodine / KI formulation that’s fairly concentrated, although I don’t recollect the exact concentration; but will retrieve the bottle at home and report on the same if anyone responds to this post. I began taking about 6 drops / day, and sometimes as high as 9 – 10 drops, along with a high dose of niacin. About 4 – 6 weeks into this regimen, I began to notice that my blood pressure was beginning to rise at work in the afternoons. It got progressively worse, and was averaging about 135/85 to 140/92 by the time I would get home. Apparently, I’m not one of those people who don’t feel an elevated pressure. It would make my head feel like it was going to split open.
I read up on high dosing with iodine, and found one source that suggested I may have been displacing metal halides, particularly bromides; and that my symptoms were typical of bromide toxicity. I quit the protocol and started dosing with about 10 grams of vitamin C / day, and getting lots of aerobic exercise in the evening. I could feel the high pressure abating a little every day until things were back to normal. It could have been caused by something else, but something is telling me it was as a result of the iodine therapy.
After about 3 1/2 months of being back to normal, it’s now back and I am freaking out. My bottom number has come down with high dose vitamin c (between 75 and 80), but the top number is staying up around 135 – 140, and exercise isn’t helping. It’s the exact same sensation I had before, except the uncontrolled blood pressure is more constant, all day; but does get worse in the afternoon.
Can someone advise me if this sounds like anything they have heard of happening? Would anyone advise chelating, and if so, what chelation agent?
I would be so grateful for any insight that anyone can offer.
Thanks,
Tony
Hi Tony,,
Sorry to hear about your problems. It may not have been the iodine at all since the blood pressure problem has returned without using any iodine now. Have you read about and tried magnesium? Magnesium plays a strong role in relaxing blood vessels and can bring down blood pressure . It is also necessary to proper chelation and detoxification of heavy metals. Most of us are deficient in magnesium. Please see our website on magnesium and Dr. Sircus’ books Transdermal Magnesium Therapy and Magnesium, The Ultimate Heart Medicine. The new addition of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy is now available on amazon.com. The other is an ebook available at IMVA Publications. http://publications.imva.info/
http://magnesiumforlife.com/
Dr. Sircus feels that everyone in this day and age needs chelation for heavy metals along with adequate magnesium levels. We are exposed from so many sources constantly. He recommends the use of HMD (Heavy Metal Detox) backed with good research by Dr. George Georgiou : http://www.heavymetaldetox.net/Heavy%20Metal%20Detox/What%20is%20it.htm
Thanks, Claudia! I am going to try your suggestion for HMD.
Best regards,
Tony
Dear Claudia,
I’m very happy that there is many info about home/real treatment. Even of my research which lasts bit over two years and about 4-5 hours a day I still can see there are many good news for me.
My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in Nov 2009. After 8 sicles of chemo, two surgeries, and 28 radiations the cancer was spread in her liver and bone. About two month ago she was in Mexican clinic could “IBC Hospital” for four weeks, which we found very good place but not quite helpfull for her. They prescribe few medications for following six month. We are looking for additional available treatment for her. We think baking soda, magnesium chloride and iodine protocol should be helpfull for her. I found that baking soda with maple syrup is also very good. What will be your sugestion in our case.
God Bless you.
Thank you,
Mike
Dear Mike,
First suggestion would be to read the books by Dr. Sircus on Sodium Bicarbonate and cancer treatment, Iodine and Magnesium. These are available through IMVA Publications at: http://www.southernliving.com/travel/south-west/shops-restaurants-houston-heights-00417000075509/
The new addition of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy is available at Amazon.com, or I believe it is also availabe through LL’s Magnetic Clay when you order Ancient Minerals Magnesium OIl: http://www.magneticclay.com/
Dr. Sircus will also have aavailable a video of his protocol very shortly which will describe in general how to use these products. He also is coming out with a book on medical marijuana use within the next few months and another on breast and prostate cancer.
Read all you can and if you would like a more specific recommendation for your wife’s treatment please consider a consultation with Dr. Sircus: See:

Hi Claudia
This is certainly not the first time we interact and I have another question for you. I notice this morning that I am developing a urinary infection (what else is new, type 1 diabetic….). I’m leaving for work in a few minutes and have the choice of going to get another prescription of antibiotics after work (since the symptoms are quite uncomfortable), or try to find iodine at my health food store. If I do find Lugol’s Iodine or some other iodine product in this situation, what dosage would be best? I’m taking magnesium, sodium bicarbonate and zeolites already.
Thanks again for your very precious help
Lyne
Hy Lyne,
I’m sorry but I cannot give you a specific dose to take as I am not a doctor. But I can direct you to Dr. Sircus’ article on iodine dosing: http://iodine.imva.info/index.php/iodine-dosages/
If you feel you want more specific direction please request a consult with Dr. Sircus. Due to possible legal ramifications we cannot give dosage recommendations on these sites.
Usually iodine will be very beneficial for urinary tract infections, but make sure to do a test with a small amount first to make sure you have no reactions since you have not been taking any iodine. And make sure to only get iodine that is for ingestion….some tinctures sold are not and can be toxic.
I have often found that just by increasing fluids by a lot and drinking some cranberry juice I can fend off a urinary infection when I first notice symptoms.
Hi again
I think my urinary infection is turning into a renal infection. I’m starting to have pain in my back and I’m freezing sometimes. This has happened to me last year and these are the symptoms I had last time. I’m so discouraged since I took antibiotics for H. Pylore about 2 months ago, followed by antibiotics for a urinary infection about 1 month after and now this! : ( I know I have to act fast and I’m afraid to take antibiotics again. I’m really hoping you can offer me an effective alternative fast : (
Thanking you once again
Lyne
I got your response while I was writting my second request. Thank you for answering.
Dear Lyne,
I hope you can get rid of this infection rapidly……it might be caused by a different bacteria than what you were treated for before. Also some people believe that alkaline urine can promote urinary tract infections and that its the acid in urine that wards them off. Check your pH and cut back on the bicarb if you are too alkaline.
I try to answer these questions within 24 hhours of postings. I have lots of other responsibilities which prevent me from immediately answering all questions. And if it is an urgent situation please don’t depend on this long distance comunication, you may need to check in with your doctor for urgent problems.
I did call my urologist but he hasn’t even called me back… The medical system here in Quebec is really bad. If I choose to go an emergency clinic, I might have to wait 12 hours before getting an antibiotic from someone who doesn’t really have time to listen to my story and my specific needs. That’s how bad it is. I try to avoid doctors and the medical system more and more but I do consider that it is necessary sometimes, although usually painful. Anyways, I was able to get my bottle of Lugol’s Solution today and a dosage to try for a bladder infection; talk about efficiency! : D
Concerning my alkalinity, I hear you. However, I must say that I’ve been using sodium bicarbonate for about a week now and there has been no PH increase in my AM saliva. In fact, I was surprised to be at around 6 this morning and the highest I’ve been is 6.5 in the past week. I even decided to take S.B. 3x/day instead of 2. In how much time can I expect to have noticeable changes?
Have a nice weekend
Dear Lyne,
Check your pH a few times/day and then keep track of the average over a few weeks to determine the real level and change. In general pH should change in a week to a month. Check your urine pH also. Though 7.2 pH is considered ideal, most doctors consider 6.5 to be perfectly acceptable.
You might also try drinking a glass of water with half a squeezed lemon in it once or twice a day….this will also help.
Claudia,
I notice an important discrepancy between my saliva and urine pH levels. My AM saliva pH is always around 6 and my urine pH, for the past 2 days, is around 7.3. I’m wondering if my urine pH is not simply the reflection of my water + sodium bicarbonate intake. Would it be better to keep taking S.B. until my saliva pH is also good or is the urine pH satisfactory enough to stop the S.B.? Maybe my saliva pH reflects the fact that my blood is still acid and that the SB will slowly move inside my body?
Concerning my kidneys, I’ve been “prescribed” by a naturopath to take 19 drops of Lugol’s 5% 3x/day for 3 weeks and 6 drops 3x/day for one more week.
I guess that this is a large amount to start of with but I’m trying it anyways because of my kidneys (which are not too bad, the discomforts come and go). Since I’m taking zeolites, I thought that the detoxification wouldn’t be too bad since the zeolites would probably adsorb some of the metals and prevent major discomfort. I’m feeling energized but I notice this morning that my thyroid is enlarging… I’ve been taking synthroid for many years after taking radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism following the birth of my first child. Is this a contraindication for iodine supplementation? Am I simply taking too much or is this a normal side-effect?
Lastly, I don’t know which doctor to turn to for my situations. Do you have any referrals to give me for a medical doctor in Canada or even better, Quebec (Montreal) to support me in this? I feel very alone with this and I don’t want to put myself in danger. I sincerely don’t know who to turn to because I know that doctors here will not understand what I’m trying to do.
Thanks
Dear Lyne,
You really need to get a consult with Dr. Sircus or join his online clinic for continued support for all your questions. He can also consult with whomever you are now working with (who is prescribing the iodine). and would be available to you through skype for ongoing support.
We do not keep any listings of Medical or Naturopathic doctors in Canada.
I have been diagnosed with Bulbar ALS… the kind of Lou Gehrig’s disease that progresses rapidly. I have been advised to add iodine to my diet. How much?
Dear Carol,
I have no idea how much your doctor is advising you take. You can consult with Dr. Sircus by requesting an appointment from Luciana at: [email protected]
Hello,
Im from Spain. I`ve autoimmune thyroiditis , i would like to know how much dosis i´ve to take of nascent iodine. And what is the difference between nano-colloidal and atomic form?
what kind is better for my specific problem?
Thanks,
Rosalía
Dear Rosalia,
We cannot address your specific iodine needs without more information from you, including a full history. You would need to obtain a consultation with Dr. Sircus for a full plan of care. Colloidal iodine and atomic iodine are basically the same. Today, iodine is being sold in many forms and many different dosing structures are recommended from low-dose to high dose therapy. People who take iodine and who have thyroid issues are often bothered with unpleasant side effects unless their selenium levels are also adequate.

I have read about iodine now for quite some time. I am diabetic and have constant ear infections and also fungus in my ears. This infection in both ears has lasted for 3 months so far. I am allergic to so many drugs. I took an antibiotic 4 weeks ago and just as I thought,it only keeps it at bay and never really gets rid of it. I have been using garlic tincture, but it doesn’t seem to get rid of the fungus. I can’t even hear my doorbell ring anymore. Of course my ears also hurt. Should I put the iodine on my head behind my ears. I have the 5% Lugol’s. I also take care of my elderly mother (85), I am hoping this might help her memory. She is 4’8″ tall and weighs 98 lbs. she has osteoporosis since birth(ricketts). I give her tahitian noni juice which has gotten rid of all of her pain, I just want her memory to improve. She is very active & we call her the elderly energizer bunny. Her blood pressure has been up lately 174/74 with heart rate of 70. My husbands blood pressure is about the same except his heart rate is around 64. He had open heart surgery 4 years ago for a broken valve. They repaired it, but he had so many complications. We have been able to get him off of all medications and also my mother doesn’t take any meds either and all I take is insulin. We all take L-arginine and time released garlic for blood pressure problems. Ear infections, memory problems and blood pressure problems is what I am interested in right now. Also, I only seem to sleep about 4 hours every night. I need help and have been looking for answers for a long time. God has finally lead me to somewhere maybe I can get some real help. Thanks so much for all the info and having this website where we can get answers to our questions. Thanks a bunch, Susan
Dear Susan,
Glad you found us. All of you should start using magnesium oil daily. Magnesium has been helpful with blood pressure and even with hearing problems. Iodine can prevent and resolve ear infections. A drop or two in the ear a few times per day of Nascent Iodine can be used. We recommend Nascent Iodine as it is much gentler than Lugols which may need to be diluted.
Nascent Iodine and Ancient Minerals Magnesium oil are both recommended by IMVA and available at LL’s Magnetic Clay: http://www.magneticclay.com/
If you wish more specific informationn on use and dosages for you and your family you need to get a consultation with Dr. Sircus. But a lot of information can be obtained from reading his books on Magnesium and Iodine.
Iodine book: http://publications.imva.info/index.php/e-books/iodine-cancer-diabetes-radiation.html available as e-book only
Transdermal Magnesium Therapy (recently published 2nd edition) is available as an e-book, soft cover and hard cover book from both amazon.com, and the publisher iUniverse:

my dog had a cancer growth on her back it was small and black hard and twisted and i knew she got it from a former dog that we had because she died of the cancer and it is the same but smaller … i had started to put baking soda on it and it was going away until it feel off and then it developed some sore of a white head on her skin with a small lump under her skin so i tried to squezz it out and it came out with ease like toothpaste white and smelly i was so excited i thought i was finally getting rid of it for her but the lump is back and the skin seems humid only in that area and i wanted to try the iodine but afraid that her skin to sensitive and if we do what do you recommend i hear that the iodine has cured many skin cancers not sure if all of them but willing to try this method sue
Susan,
You would have to see how irritating the iodine would be to your dog, but you could alternate a paste of sodium bicarbonate with iodine a few times per day. Iodine can also be given in the dog’s water…about 1 drop per 25 lb of weight….but give only what she will drink within a very short time….do not allow the iodine and water to be standing for more than an hour.
Greetings!
I have recently had strange excessive hair loss which could probably attributed to a few factors like changing hormones or even stress. My naturopath was reading some research info. on iodine/iodide for hair loss but she isn’t quite sure of any of it since the information is vague. I recently purchased liquid Atomidine (1 drop 0.06 ml), liquid potassium iodide (2 drops 0.125 ml) and a liquid kelp (4 drops 0.25 ml) products.
My question is: What is the difference between iodine and iodide? This is most confusing to me. Is iodide a different form of iodine and which is the best? I realize you probably cannot specify dosages, however, I now have 3 products I do not know how to use. I have read alot of the info. here and am very interested in the various health benefits of iodine, magnesium and aluminum-free bicarbonate. I will probably purchase a book but in the interim I’m wondering if taking both iodine and potassium iodide would be unnecessary and excessive?
Thanks for your answer in advance!
Dear Jai,
There is some controversey over which type of iodine is the best and some doctors like David Brownstein advocate the need for both iodine and potassium iodide as they say different organs use and accept each differently. Nascent iodine can be used by all organs and provides the needed form. Most people are iodine deficient but you can take too much…..
You must read the Iodine book written by Dr. Sircus for a better understanding. Dr. Brownstein has also written a book on his own views of iodine. Its also widely available on the Internet.

Thank you Claudia for your speedy response!
I heard that putting small amounts of iodine in my sons orange juice every morning will help his growth spurt for him to be taller. is this true? (he is about 14 and going through a lot of growth spurts)
Joe,
I have no idea if thats true or not. Sorry
